Amina Mwongozi
In recognition of August's World Water Week, AWWEE is proud to celebrate Amina Mwongozi, a member of our community whose creativity, leadership, and innovative thinking help strengthen the work supporting California's water resources.
Amina serves as a Supervisor I with the California Department of Water Resources, where she tackles complex operational challenges, develops innovative solutions, and fosters a culture of collaboration, learning, and growth within her team.
One example of Amina's innovative approach is ANnIE, a data centralization and modernization tool she developed to transform the way her team manages grant administration and branch operations. ANnIE, short for Analyst and also an acronym for Amendments, Numbers, 'n Invoice Entry, leverages locally automated scripts to organize incoming requests, generate task assignments, and improve communication between requestors and analysts. It also visualizes grant- and operations-related budget information and serves as a nexus between the grant administration programs and the funding program. By identifying workflow bottlenecks and streamlining processes, Amina and her team are increasing transparency, strengthening oversight, and improving efficiency.
For Amina, the most rewarding part of her work is creating meaningful solutions while helping her team grow, build confidence, and achieve mastery in their roles.
Her passion for innovation extends beyond the workplace. Amina is also a talented music composer and songwriter, describing the creative process as "pretty magical" because ideas come so naturally to her. In her free time, she enjoys making espresso, bowling in a league, building Legos, traveling, and producing and performing music.
Since joining AWWEE in April 2025, Amina has enjoyed connecting with likeminded women, expanding her professional community, and learning from others across the water, energy, and environmental sectors. She also draws inspiration from her best friend, Stephcynie, whose ambition, kindness, and commitment to continuous growth motivate her both personally and professionally.
