Please join us for morning coffee and networking, followed by a walking tour of the Water Replenishment District’s Albert Robles Center (ARC) and an Eco Gardener Workshop.
The Water Replenishment District (WRD) has been managing and protecting groundwater resources for 60 years for the four million people in southern Los Angeles County. WRD manages two of the most utilized groundwater basins in the nation and through its Water Independence Now (WIN) Program, the District has developed a resilient and locally sustainable supply of stormwater and recycled water for groundwater replenishment.
We’ll gather for coffee and networking on the rooftop garden before we set out on a tour of the Albert Robles Center facility. This impressive LEED Platinum certified facility includes an advanced water purification system which treats up to 14.8 million gallons of water per day, a museum-grade learning center, and green infrastructure gardens. The tour itself is worth the visit and attendees have the option to leave the event at this point. Anticipated tour end between 9:45-10a.m.
Following the tour, interested attendees will meet in the facility’s multipurpose room for an educational workshop with focused on rainwater capture. We’ll have light breakfast items available to enjoy during the workshop. This workshop will emphasize nature-based solutions for passive and active capture of rainwater in your landscape. Discussion includes considerations in selecting a site-appropriate rainwater capture method, designing swales and berms, and directing water into and out of rain gardens. Attendees are sure to come away with ideas they can implement before rainy season begins!
This workshop is part of the Lillian Kawasaki Eco Gardener Program. During her tenure at WRD, Lillian Kawasaki initiated the Eco Gardner Program to promote water awareness and educate people about sustainability practices. We are especially excited to promote this exciting program since Lillian Kawasaki was one of the founding members of the AWWEE Board of Directors.
WRD’s Eco Gardener Program offers the community engaging, free, in-person classes, including bilingual workshops. Whether you're interested in sustainable landscape design, drought-tolerant plants, rainwater capture, or edible gardening, they've got you covered!
