Climate Communications 101: How to Communicate Climate Science Effectively

Science matters, but how we communicate science can make all the difference.

Whether you work directly with the public, engage with communities and stakeholders, or support this work behind the scenes, the way you frame information can shape how your message is understood and received.

Join experts from the National Network for Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation (NNOCCI) and The Marine Mammal Center for an interactive webinar exploring evidence-based approaches to effective climate and science communication. Learn how social science can help you craft messages that connect with your audience and make complex topics more accessible and meaningful.

Through a presentation and interactive activity, participants will explore communication strategies that use values, framing, and metaphors to encourage more positive, solutions focused on conversations around climate change. You will leave with practical approaches you can apply to your own communications, outreach, and professional work.

NNOCCI is a nationally recognized network of climate communicators supported through a fiscal sponsorship with The Marine Mammal Center.

About Our Speakers:

Kait Birghenthal joined the Center’s staff in 2022 to provide operational support for the Center’s climate change educational grants, specifically the Center’s fiscal sponsorship of the National Network for Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation (NNOCCI). Kait is very familiar with NNOCCI after supervising the program during the last two years of their multi-million-dollar National Science Foundation grant a few years ago.

Kait obtained her Master of Professional Science degree in Marine Conservation from the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. During her undergraduate studies, Kait helped create and launch Ocean Kids, a nonprofit focused on providing experiential learning of marine science and conservation for minoritized youth in the Greater Miami area. Throughout her career, she is proud to have served in a variety of educator and research roles along the East Coast with aquariums, schools and NOAA.

Kait resides outside of Boston with her husband and their rescued lab mix, Maui. When not in educator-mode, Kait loves spending time with loved ones, baking, exploring tide pools whilst traveling, and singing maybe-too-loudly to music.

Krystal Krucik leads program development and implementation, including tours and behind-the-scenes experiences, virtual programs and interpretive resources in Sausalito, as Public Programs Coordinator at The Marine Mammal Center.

Prior to joining the Center, Krystal served in roles at the New England Aquarium, the EcoTarium and San Diego Zoo. Krystal has a long-standing passion for rehabilitating marine mammals, having volunteered with the Sea Otter Research and Conservation team at Monterey Bay Aquarium while earning her bachelor’s degree at UC Santa Cruz. She is also a Certified Interpretive Guide through the National Association of Interpretation.

Krystal also loves board games, trapeze, and long walks with her dog.
