Join fellow AWWEE members for this special tour of the formerly operational San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) as it goes through the decommissioning process.
On this roughly 2-mile walking tour, you will see several portions of the power plan in-person. Don’t worry, the tour does not include any radiological areas. Along the way, we’ll learn about the engineering structures, how the plant worked, radiation, discuss fuel storage and protection, and other aspects of the decommissioning and site demolition process.
Following the tour, interested attendees may stay onsite for a boxed lunch picnic.
Please note that this tour requires participants to walk/stand for 2 hours on sometimes uneven pavement and dirt. The route includes a steep hill. Please include on your registration if you have mobility constraints so we can do our best to accommodate you.
Pay close attention to your registration confirmation email for instructions regarding attire and required safety gear.
Security
There are strict security clearance requirements to visit the SONGS site. Registrants must provide their full legal name, last 4 digits of social security number (or passport number if not a U.S. citizen), date of birth, and country of citizenship, to be cleared to participate in the tour. Please double check your registration form before you submit. If the information provided is not accurate, you may not be confirmed to participate.
Confirmed registrants will be sent a second confirmation with directions to the facility and instructions for where to meet the tour group. Expect this information via email sometime after September 8, 2023.
Registration
This event is open to AWWEE members only. There is no cost to attend the tour. If you choose to join us for lunch, a small fee will be added to help offset the cost.
To allow sufficient time to process the security clearances, registration for this event will close on September 8, 2023.
