Serving on a Board is a fulfilling way to support organizations that you care about, as well as grow as a leader, develop new skill sets, and expand your network. Join us for this discussion with a panel of dynamic female leaders who will share tips and insights for how to pursue a Board position or appointment in both the public and private sector. They will speak from personal and professional experience and discuss key responsibilities, expectations and more.

Our Speakers

Phyllis Currie - Retired General Manger, Pasadena Water and Power

Phyllis Currie is the former General Manager of the Pasadena, CA Water and Power Department.  She is on the board of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, which she chaired from 2019 through 2021. In July 2021, she joined the board of Global Clean Energy Holding, Inc., a renewable fuels company. AWWEE is also proud to have Phyllis Currie on its Board of Directors.

Ms. Currie also has extensive past board service experience.  In March of this year, Ms. Currie completed a 6-year term on the national board of Grid Alternatives, including serving as president. She was board president of the California Municipal Utilities Association, as well as the Southern California Public Power Authority, and board chair of the American Public Power Association. She has served on the Department of Energy Electricity Advisory Committee, the board of the Electric Power Research Institute and the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board.

Marcie Edwards - Principal of MLE Corp., Inc.

Marcie L. Edwards currently sits on the Board of the Commercial Media and Community Trust (CMCT stock symbol,) a real estate investment trust based out of Delaware. She is also on the Board of Directors for S&C Electric Products out of Chicago, as well as a member of the Board of the Santa Clarita Boys and Girls Club. Marcie is also a member of the SoCal Gas Advisory Safety Committee. Marcie is a past Chair of California’s Wildfire Safety Advisory Board, and is also a former General Manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power; she was the first woman to lead LADWP, the nation’s largest municipal utility. She also sat on the AWWEE Board for a number of years, as one of our founding directors. She previously ran Anaheim Public Utilities for 13 years then was tapped to serve as Anaheim City Manager in July 2013. A past Governor on the California Independent System Operator Board, Marcie also served as interim CEO of that agency in 2004, and, in that role, assisted in avoiding statewide power outages during the Energy Crisis.

Kassandra Gough - Vice President of Calpine Corporation

Kassandra Gough is Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs for Calpine Corporation and a recognized expert on California’s energy and environmental policies.  Ms. Gough is a member of the Board of Directors for California Women Lead, The California Foundation for the Environment and the Economy (CFEE) and the California Rangeland Trust’s Legacy Council. She currently serves as Chair of the Independent Energy Producers Association (IEPA).  She has worked in both the public and private sectors for more than 25 years, including serving 5 years as Deputy Director at the California Department of Fish and Game, and 6 years at the Building Industry Association of Northern California as Director of Environmental Affairs.  She has built strong ties with key legislators and regulators and forged constructive working relationships with labor, environmental and business leaders. Ms. Gough possesses a proven track record of coalition-building and grassroots organizing, advocacy and politics, message development and issue campaigns.
