From Dry to Drenched: Managing California’s Water System

Over the last several months, California has been hit by one major winter storm after another. These rain and snowstorms come after years of drought and potentially signal an end to one of the driest periods on record across the state. How are state and local agencies reacting to the onslaught of water across the state?

As this cycle of dry to drenched seems to be the new norm, what does that mean for water management moving forward? Join us for a panel discussion with representatives from the California Department of Water Resources, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, Turlock Irrigation District, and Soquel Creek Water District to share their insight on water supply management now, lessons learned in response to the recent storms, and what climate change means for water management in the future.

Our Speakers

  • Jeanine Jones, Interstate Resources Manager, California Department of Water Resources (DWR) will provide an overview of the current state of the water supply in California, what DWR’s plans are going forward, and how it is thinking about atmospheric rivers.

  • Dr. F Martin (Marty) Ralph, Director of the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes, Scripps Institute of Oceanography will provide a technical overview of atmospheric rivers at the state level and provide some context for the series of storms that hit California earlier this year.

  • Michelle Reimers, General Manager, Turlock Irrigation District (TID) will offer a perspective from the central valley and talk about how TID navigated water management and Don Pedro during the storms.

  • Melanie Mow Schumacher, Special Projects-Communications Manager at Soquel Creek Water District will offer a perspective from the central coast and talk about how Soquel navigated its local projects and responsibilities during the storms.
