Tour of Strauss Wind Farm

We are very lucky to have special access through one of our members to tour the recently energized
BayWa r.e. Strauss Wind Farm just outside of the City of Lompoc in Santa Barbara County.

The Strauss Wind Farm features 29 turbines standing up to 492 feet tall with 220-foot-long turbine blades. The farm can produce enough electricity to power 36,000 homes. The project also includes a new 7.3-mile-long, 115-kV transmission line connects Strauss Wind to PG&E.

Not only will we get to see the enormous wind turbines in action, but we’ll also learn about the project design, community benefits, and environmental and cultural mitigation measures employed.

We expect the tour will take place between 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM. We’ll head into Lompoc for lunch as a group after.

The tour includes some walking on uneven ground to view the turbines up close. Visitors should also be aware that the site is very windy. Attendees should dress accordingly.

UPDATE ON GROUP TRANSPORTATION/SHUTTLE

Based on the responses of the initial group of 18 registrants, we have determined that a shuttle from the Los Angeles area is not a cost effective option. Registrants may sign up to carpool to/from the event using the link provided in the registration confirmation email.

Registration

Registration for this special event will be limited to active AWWEE members only until May 27. If we have space available after that date, we will open it to non-members.

Member registration is $25 and includes lunch in Lompoc after the tour.
