SAVE THE DATE: Guided Hike at SMUD’s Rancho Seco Recreational Area

  • 14960 Twin Cities Road Herald, CA, 95638 United States (map)

Join AWWEE for a guided 2-mile walk along the lake at SMUD’s Rancho Seco Recreational Area.

We’ll explore the unique beauty of vernal pools, riparian marsh, and native grassland habitats. Enjoy seasonal wildflowers and sweeping views of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the distance.

When filled with water, vernal pools play a critical role in supporting federally listed threatened and endangered species, including the California tiger salamander, fairy shrimp, tadpole shrimp, and Western spadefoot toad. In the spring, vibrant wildflowers blanket these basins, creating a spectacular and fleeting display you won’t want to miss.

About Our Guides:

Emily Bacchini has been with SMUD for over 13 years and has worked with vernal pool habitats for more than 25 years. Rancho Seco is one of her “happy places,” and she looks forward to sharing some of its natural treasures and ecological significance during this special hike.

Becky Rozumowicz-Kodsuntie is a Senior Biologist and President of Area West Environmental. She has conducted surveys at the SMUD Nature Preserve Mitigation Bank for more than 15 years and is excited to introduce AWWEE to this unique and carefully stewarded ecosystem.
